Appointed for excellence. Special qualities worth retaining.

Judge Barbara McCarthy was nominated by the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit judicial Nominating Committee and then appointed a Circuit Court Judge by the Governor in 2009. Prior to her Circuit Court appointment, she served as a General Magistrate since 2003.

But long before Judge McCarthy ever sat on the bench, she was making a difference. She began her career as a social worker and special education teacher -helping children succeed when others gave up on them. Her days of working one-on-one with children and their families helped develop a calm demeanor and patience which have only enhanced her judicial qualifications and made her a better judge.

In the course of raising a young daughter as a single parent, Barbara managed to build an impressive resume as an Assistant State Attorney, private practitioner, and Assistant City Attorney. Then as General Magistrate, she developed the first magistrate division in Civil Court, presiding over important civil matters such as major commercial litigation, personal injury disputes, and real estate controversies.

Judge McCarthy has returned to her roots -looking after Florida's most vulnerable children. She presently serves in the Unified Family Court's Dependency Division, where she primarily presides over adoptions and children who are the subject of allegations of child abuse, neglect and abandonment. Judge McCarthy also handles cases in the Family Division, where she presides over divorces, child custody and other family law matters.

Judge McCarthy resides with her husband (not pictured), her 16 year old daughter Colleen, and her dogs Skipper and Sundae.
Judge Barbara McCarthy has built a broad base of support throughout the community. Through her work in the dependency, family and civil divisions, as well as her former positions as an Assistant State Attorney and Assistant Fort Lauderdale City Attorney, she has gained valuable experience throughout our justice system. But it is her real-life work with children and families as a social worker and special education teacher that makes her most unique. She is even.Jhanded, fair and patient, and fully recognizes and appreciates the important position of trust she holds.
